Teledentistry expands for COVID-19

On May 6, 2020, Horizon BCBSNJ extended the date of updates, from May 15, 2020 to June 15, 2020.

We are committed to helping you provide care to patients during this public health crisis. Horizon BCBSNJ continues to monitor the American Dental Association guidelines, and local, state and federal guidance related to COVID-19.

We want to provide further guidance related to the codes for teledentistry. As of March 15, 2020, Horizon BCBSNJ will reimburse CDT codes 0140 and 0170 without any frequency limitations when submitted on a claim for the same date of service as the teledentistry codes D9995/D9996. Through May 15, 2020, unless extended, the frequency is no longer limited to once every six months.

When CDT codes 0140 and 0170 are submitted without the teledentistry codes D9995/D9996, Horizon BCBSNJ will apply frequency limitations and exclusions per the member’s benefits.
